Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this persistent problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "We have the same goal, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

They added the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is advocating that changes to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted experts and compiled materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
