In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
