The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
